ESD protection inbuilt in the IC

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD251

Hi,

I am using SN65HVD251D device in my product. As i see its ESD rating per below

          Human body model(HBM), per ANSI/ESDA/JEDEC JS-001  :   All pins                           : +/- 14000V
                                                                           CANH,CANL and GND  :+/- 6000V
Why there is a different voltage  between 'All pins' and 'CANH,CANL and GND' above.?
Are 'All pins' considered without CANH or CANL?
Whether this IC supports the ESD standard IEC 61000-4-2 level 4.
Can i use this with out using any external ESD protection diode?
Thanks,
Akhil
  • Hi Akhil,

Why there is a different voltage between 'All pins' and 'CANH, CANL and GND' above?

Typically on devices like transceivers the bus pins will include additional ESD protection since ESD event most commonly occur on the bus. There is a typo in the datasheet though. During a recent revamp of the SN65HVD251 datasheet the technical writing department transposed the ESD values wrong in the document. The bus pins and GND are actually rated for =/14kV HBM and all pins on the devices are reated for =/-6kV.

Are 'All pins' considered without CANH or CANL?

CANH and CANL are included in all pins.

Whether this IC supports the ESD standard IEC 61000-4-2 level 4.

No, this device is not rated for IEC ESD level 4. It may pass levels 1-3 but I have never personally tested this and have no data to support a claim that it will.

Can i use this with out using any external ESD protection diode?

Yes, the device can be used with or without a TVS. Your application may warrant the need for external ESD protection though so plan the design accordingly.
