Isolated RS485 TRANSCEIVER REQUIREMENT

Hi,

I want to add a RS485 transceiver in a variable frequency drive. It will communicate on modbus with other device. I am not sure what should I go with ,a non isolated transceiver or a isolated one. As cost is also a factor.

  • Hi Siddharth,

Do you need to transfer data between two different voltage domains with large offsets between their ground potentials? Or, do you need to prevent a connection between grounds of both nodes in order for your system to be functional? If so, you should use isolation. Otherwise, you could save cost by using a non-isolated transceiver.
