SN65HVD11: Internal ESD structure / External ESD protection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD11

Dear Team,

we received a question regarding the ESD performance of the SN65HVD11.

On the one hand, the data sheet states the part's ESD robustness in chapter 7.2:

Later on the application section still recommends a TSV diode to pass the tests:

Could you please comment and help us understand why the external protection is still recommended?

Thanks and best regards
Martin

  • Hi Martin,

The wording in Section 10.2.2 is probably too strong. It should say that external protection can be used to protect against transient stresses that exceed the rating of the part. In this case, the device specifies immunity to HBM and CDM ESD stresses, but not ESD stresses per IEC 61000-4-2. If a system required IEC ESD immunity, then, it should implement external protection. External TVS diodes would not be needed if the system only required immunity to 16-kV HBM strikes. They would also not be needed to achieve immunity to 4-kV electrical fast transients (per IEC 61000-4-4) even though this level is mentioned in Section 10.2.2; this immunity level is already covered by the device specification.

I hope this is clear; please let me know if you have any further questions.

    Regards,
    Max
