AM26C32: Input Voltage exceeding the Absolute Maximum ratings

Part Number: AM26C32
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM26C31

Hello Team,

Our customer uses AM26C32 receiver together with AM26C31 in a repeater system.

Occasionally they face the problem that  another equipment in the system can inject up to +/-15V into the repeater. This is exceeding the absolute max ratings of the device.

The question is:-

Apart from the note (1) on under section 6.1 which writes the device may be damaged, can we predict the failure mode during this condition?

Will the high voltage at the input be propagated to the output  of the repeater?

Best regards,

  • Mizanur,

Up to +/15V probably won't damage the device (especially if ground is not shifted) because it is just 1V over absolute maximum.

However, it could break and the most likely result is short or leakage to ground. It is very unlikely that the AM26C31 digital output would be overvoltage.
