TCAN1051H: TVS Diode Recommendation for 60V Battery System

Part Number: TCAN1051H

Hi Team,

Good morning, do we have a TVS diode recommendation for CAN buses with higher battery voltages, around ~60V (instead of the traditional 12V/24V) for use with the TCAN1051H?

Looking at the IEC61000 transient protection reference design, the breakdown voltage of the TVS devices is geared for 12V/24V systems and is well below 60V.

Thank you!

Regards,

~John

  • John,

We don't have a specific recommendation for that case, and looking around, most TVS diodes with 60V breakdown have clamping of 80V+. I found a few with 78V clamping at 60V breakdown, and 55V breakdown with 70V clamping, but nothing at 60V breakdown and 70V clamping unfortunately.

http://www.littelfuse.com/products/tvs-diodes/automotive-and-high-reliability-tvs/tpsmb/tpsmb51ca.aspx - Here is a TVS diode with 53.6V breakdown and 70V clamping voltage

Another thing you could try is AC coupling the TVS diode, so it only responds to the fast pulse of the transient, allowing you to use a device with a lower breakdown and the 70V clamping that you need.

Let me know if you have any more questions, and in the mean time, I'll keep looking around.

    Regards,
