SN65HVD251: CAN chip can be put into a shorting condition

Part Number: SN65HVD251

We have found that this chip can be put into a shorting condition and thusly take down an CAN bus. Has a "latching condition" or "internal short" condition been observed in this chip before?

  • Sean,

I am not aware of an internal shorting condition or a latching condition happening on these devices. Are you seeing this happen in your system? And if so, what exactly is the condition that it is happening under?

This device has thermal shutdown protection in the cases where a short-to-GND or short-to-battery occurs on the bus, and the bus pins are rated up to +/-36V for the same reason. So if/when a short is happening, there shouldn't be any destruction happening.

Let me know if you can provide anymore information.

    Regards,
