SN65HVS885: Configuration Question

Part Number: SN65HVS885

If there is a voltage of 24 volts on one input(like IP0) and a ground on another(like IP1 or the rest of the pins), would these pins be able to handle this kind of function if the ground for the chip is accidentally disconnected from the input cable(basically becoming a different GND)?  Would there be any adverse effects?

Regards,
Ramon

  • Hello Ramon,

It would be better to think of each input independently instead of together as they don't really interact with each other.  If the ground reference for IP0 is different than the chip ground, voltage difference of the IP0 to chip ground is what matters.

As an example, assume there was a ground shift, relative to SN65HVS885 ground, across all of the inputs due to some type of disconnect. The voltage measured from IP0 to chip ground is what is going to potentially damage the device if it is above the abs max rating. The difference between IP0 and IP1 would not be relevant here as IP1's voltage relative to ground is what will also potentially damage the device.

    Regards,
