MAX3221E: Transceiver behavior when not powered

Part Number: MAX3221E
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MAX3221,

Hello,

I use the MAX3221EIPWR in my design to convert RS232 to UART to communicate with a microcontroller. There will likely be cases in my application where the device connected to the RS232 side will be active and possibly communicating to the MAX3221 chip when the MAX3221 chip isn't even powered. Do I have to worry about damaging the MAX3221 part since the receiver line will see RS232 voltages when not powered? What will the UART side look like in this case, since the Microcontroller won't be powered either. Do I have to worry about damaging the microcontroller when not powered?

Thanks,

Gabe
