I'm investigating what will be needed to provide a USB based charging solution. I see there is more required than just providing a DC supply if i want to be able to charge products from the likes of Apple, Samsung etc.

I have taken a look at the various charge port controllers but am confused over all the USB detail as its not an area i've designed in before. Essentially i just want a DC supplied USB charger and am not interested in the USB data.

Can somebody recommend which specific devices i should look into please?

Hi Howard,

Just a couple questions for you.

1. You are looking at charging devices from a USB Type-A port correct?

2. What would the USB Charging controller application be (wall adapter, power bank, etc.)?

Hi Donovan,

I'll be looking to present the user with a Type A panel mount connector. They then plug their device into that using a corresponding lead.

The application is for a charging port on a wall that is powered through PoE. I will need to take the PoE voltage and step down to 5V to provide the USB power. I'm hoping the charge controller will allow me to correctly charge any USB charging device presented to it.

Hi Howard,

If you are only needing a dedicated charging port (DCP), I'd recommend looking at the TPS2511. It takes care of the BC1.2 handshake and supports other devices such as Apple and Samsung through divider modes. Other options would be the TPS254x family of devices (start with the TPS2546) which get more complex. If you scroll towards the bottom of the TPS2511 link, there should be comparisons of all the TPS254x family along with the TPS2511. The TPS2511 also has the PMP8851 USB Battery Charging reference design and application note Creating a Universal Car Charger for USB Devices to help get you started (I know this isn't an Automotive design but should provide a good reference).
