TPS65986EVM: Soft reset when device's displaying

Part Number: TPS65986EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65981

H:

I wanna set TPS65986EVM to be a DRP which send signal to monitor from device via EXPANSION board and provide power to device .

Attached is a FW which I use.

It can work on LG G5, but it fail on ASUS Zenfone AR. I use Type-C analyzer to capture some log, and I found it always soft reset.

Thanks,

Joshua

  • Hi Joshua,

Welcome to E2E! You're in luck, on the Application Customization Tool (During Debug mode) there's a register called PD status. This register will tell you the details on what's causing the soft reset (look below for a screenshot). Load the TPS65986 template on the GUI ==> Flash the firmware onto the device ==> After flashed, click on Debug Mode ==>  Click on Debug Registers ==> Click on PD Status ==> Look at the Soft Reset Details. FYI, make sure the device is connected to your laptop during debug mode.

Also, it might be useful to take a look at our Host Interface Technical Reference Manual which can be found here: http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slvuan1a/slvuan1a.pdf . This guide goes over all the registers and values for our TPS65981/2/6 PD controllers.

I hope this helps and If this answers your question, PLEASE select  This resolved my issue.

  • Hi Aramis:

    Thanks for reply.

I followed your instruction and Soft Reset Details showed "tps6598 soft reset sent after retries were exhausted".

    What is this mean?

    How should I resolve?

    Thanks,

    Joshua

  • Hi  Joshua,

It seems that the PD controller is trying to ask for a Vendor ID but the Asus Zenfone isn't communicating one per your log above. This might be an issue with the PD controller in the Asus system.
