TPS65983B: About port multiplexer of TPS65983B and configuration

Hi,

I design a board these days.

It is connected  to Tablet computer through type-c.

The board  provide power to charging the tablet and communicate with the tablet by USB2.0.

The board does NOT have DisplayPort, that is , it  does NOT need alterlate mode fuction.

Tablet is Host. The board is USB device , and has 5V power itself ,  NOT  powered by Tablet.

My questions is:

1. Can I direct connect the D+/D- line from Tablet(HOST)  to USB device? Not through the Port Data Multiplexer in TPS65983B.

See the diagram attached.

2.The board's POWER role is SOURCE, and DATA role is UFP.

Which template can I use in the configuration tool?

    Welcome to E2E! Look below for my comments/feedback in red:

    1. Can I direct connect the D+/D- line from Tablet(HOST)  to USB device? Not through the Port Data Multiplexer in TPS65983B. See the diagram attached.

    We highly recommend using our USB 2.0 mux with our PD controllers, as well as our EVM user's guide as a schematic reference to your project. May I ask the reason why you would like to use a different device to handle the USB 2.0 muxing? I'll find out if you can connect the D+/D- lines to another device by tomorrow :-)

    2.The board's POWER role is SOURCE, and DATA role is UFP. Which template can I use in the configuration tool?

    Is this a thunderbolt application? If not, I would recommend the template shown below as a screenshot. Also, one can change the settings of a template after it's been loaded on the "Shared Device Settings tab".

    1. The USB Device(CY7C68013) is NOT used to handle muxing. It is a USB 2.0 mcu in another board. It communicate  with the tablet in USB2.0  BULK tranfer mode.

    We don't use usb3.0  SS signal, AUX signal, Sub signal and display port.  We don't need the Billboard fuction of  tps65983b . So I want to direct connect the D+/D- to CY7C68013. It will make the design simple and 

    cancle  4 ESD elements on the USB_RP_P/N and C_USB_TP/N  of tps65983. This will lower the production cost. 

    2.It is not a thunderbolt application. We only need USB 2.0 communication.

    Since you don't need super speed lines and sbu lines, but need to handle PD negotiations, I would recommend the TPS25740B device.  It's a type-C and USB PD source controller. The TPS65983B has more features than what your application is being used for, and it's MUCH cheaper.
