TUSB320: What configuration should I be using for a tablet-charging hub?

Hi!

here's what I need to do:

1. Have a tablet with USB-C as the master. Should control two devices (may or may not be USB-C).

2. One of the above devices will actually have the hub in question laid out on its board, with the 5V power serving as the tablet charger, so the port where the tablet (the host) is plugged should be the charging port at a rate of around 1.5 - 1.8A.

I think TUSB320 is the way to go but since it is really new to me, i would like some insight from more experienced folk.

Hi Mike,

Could you provide a block diagram for your application?

The TUSB320 has 3 different levels of current: low (900mA), med (1.5A) and high (3A) for advertising, this device does not support power delivery. Hence, in your case the TUSB320 should be set in high current profile to provide 1.5-1.8A.

If you could provide a block diagram with your application, we could suggest the best configuration for your scenario.

Hello Mike,

The TUSB320 should be set in DRP mode to detect the Device USB slave as a UFP attachment. And for USB C charging to advertise the 1.5-1.8A (use the high current profile of 3A).

What I am not sure of as to how to implement the hub. Does TUSB320 even fit in the application, considering the block diagram? Or could you recommend something else or in addition to it?

Hi Mike,

Please take a look into the HD3SS3220 that is a MUX + TUSB322, basically with this device you could switch between 2 different signals, and has built-in a USB Type C port controller.

I am not sure what to do here.

First, I have received the TUSB320EVM only to have read the manual and found out I need more than one EVM to even use it. Or am I being wrong?

Second, I am not sure (after looking at the HD3SS3220) how to use it together with the TUSB320 to create a high current charging hub, the block diagram for which I showed in the beginning of the thread.

Could you or someone please provide a bit more detailed answer to this? Considering I do not have a whole lot of time to experiment, build a proto and find out it does not do what I hope it would? I am not very experienced in USB charging hub apps.

PS. I am trying to look through that manual for the TUSB320EVM.

The power diagram at the page 9 (DC_IN and uAB_VBUS diode-ORing into the TPS2590) doesn't seem to agree with how the schematic is, where the micAB_VBUS is the diode-ORed result of the TypeC_VBUS and DC_IN which then go to the TPS2590.

Hi Mike,

You may want to look at the Type-C dock reference design. It has more features that what you are describing, but it will give you an idea of the required devices to implement a charging hub.
