TPS65986: 150uF electrolytic capacitor at PP_5V0 (PP_CABLE)

Part Number: TPS65986

Hi Team,

There is 150uF electrolytic capacitor at PP_5V0 (PP_CABLE) for TPS65986EVM.
Is it mandatory component to design with TPS65986?
Is seems there isn't description about the capacitor in datasheet.

  • Hello Yaita,

The purpose for using a large capacitor on the power path is to help ensure that supply voltage is stable. When there are large load transitions (0A to 3A), there will be a brief voltage drop in the power path. Having the capacitor in place helps mitigate this drop.

The reason why a value of 150uF was used is actually due to the USB Type-C PD specs. Is says that a shared supply port (which PP5V is) must have a bulk capacitance of at least 120uF. There is no maximum allowable capacitance, so the 150uF was chosen. For your application, you do not have to use a 150uF capacitor, but it needs to be larger than 120uF.
