Hey Russell,
The SN74AVC4T245 was characterized at 15pF load, and since its data rate is 100 Mbps in the worst case (1.2V), I would expect a 20-40pF load to work fine at 40 Mbps (20 MHz) - especially at the higher operating voltages.

That's about the load our test boards put onto the device for bench characterization (~30pF). I would start to question the performance past ~70pF.
