ISO7730: ISO7730

Part Number: ISO7730

How does the ISO7730 operate such that it must consume the power it does? Please share the specifics with me so I understand.

Thank you.

  • Hi Phil,

Thank you for using E2E Forum.
Please note that the digital isolator ISO7730 is made of multiple blocks as shown in Figure 17 of ISO7730 datasheet. The device also consists of other blocks like the UVLO circuit that assist the main blocks. Each block is carefully designed to keep the power consumption to as minimal as possible at the same time providing the best performance, as stated in the datasheet.

Since each block needs a definite amount of power to do its job, it is expected to consume the same power every time it up and running. When the power consumption of all the blocks is summed up, we will arrive at device's total power consumption. Please note that there is going to be a variation in total power consumed based on the voltage applied, the ambient temperature and other external factors. Thus the expected variation in total device power consumption is provided in the datasheet considering all the above stated factors.

I hope that answers your question, please let me know if there is anything else that you are looking for. Thank you.

  • What circuit in the ISO7730 consumes almost 1/2A of current and why?
  • Hi Phil,

On an unused fresh device, none of the blocks in ISO7730 consume any current more than 20mA. But if a device is damaged by violating any of the datashset specs (especially VCC/GND) and causing an internal short between any device pin and GND then it can consume higher current than 20mA based on the kind of short created.

Is there any issue are you facing with ISO7730? If you can share us more details if you are facing any issues then I can help look into it. Let me know, thanks.

  • Hi Phil,

Koteshwar is on travel at the moment, so am following-up and posting here.

    1) When you mention 1/2A current, are you referring to the safety limiting values section of the datasheet? Or was this measured on a board? If it's the latter, then as Koteshwar mentioned, it is unusual and may be seen in a fault or if some damage has occurred - but not the normal expected value.
    2) Sanity check only: are the current levels 0.5A or 1A to 2A range ? I know this sounds silly, but wanted to be sure just in case.

Appreciate any clarifications here so we can help you further.

    Thanks,
    abhi
