SN6501: Primary side current drive

Part Number: SN6501
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN6505A

Hi team,

Let me ask you basic question.

Datasheet shows that SN6501 has ability to drive 350mA(max) @5V.

Is this RMS or peak value?

[Background]

My customer measured primary current and the result was 600mA as peak current and 220mA as RMS.

Best regards,

Shota Mago

  • Hi Shota-san,

350mA max spec in SN6501 datasheet is the maximum average current that the primary side of SN6501 supports. This means that the peak current can be slightly higher (usually 20%) but shouldn't be too high for device reliability.

May I know what is your customer input/output voltage and current requirement? If the output current requirement is <100mA then I do not believe input current should go to 600mA of peak current. If the output current requirement is much higher than 100mA then I would recommend customer to consider SN6505A/B in place of SN6501.

Let me know if you have any questions, thank you.

  • Hi Koteshwar-san

Thank you for your kind explanation.

I'm asking the customer  input/output voltage and current requirement.

Also I'm suggesting SN6505x in stead of SN6501.

When I have additional question, I'll let you know.

    Best regards,
