SN6501: Can SN6501QDBVRQ1 be used with 3:4 gate Drive Transformer

Part Number: SN6501
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO1042-Q1,

We are looking to integrate Isolated CAN and are planning to use SN6501QDBVRQ1 for generating the isolated supply voltage which power-up the CAN transceiver.

PH9085.034NL is the gate drive transformer selected. Is this transformer suitable to be integrated with SN6501QDBVRQ1 for 5V to 5V /1W supply

How much Transformer isolation is usually required for Automotive Isolated CAN application?

  • Mutum,

Welcome to e2e! Our isolated CAN transceivers, like the ISO1042-Q1, offer 5kV of isolation strength for automotive applications. Isolation requirements in automotive application will depend of the type of automobile, such as HEV, EV, or ICE, and the isolation requirements may vary.

Section 9.2.2.5 of the SN6501 datasheet contains a transformer selection guide for choosing the right transformer. The PH9085.034NL seems to only offer 2.5kV of isolation strength. This amount of isolation will need to be enough for your application or else a transformer with higher isolation will need to be chosen.

    Respectfully,,

    Lucas
