CD4504B for 5V -> 3.3V Operation?

We have a 5V encoder that's going into a 3.3V encoder and need to translate the voltage. The encoder (input) is push/pull and the controller (output from chip) should work with TTL.

I want to verify that this chip will work in this application and get a recommendation on what to do with the select line.

Vcc is 5V, Vdd is 3.3V

Temperature range is 15-50C

Hi Colin

I would not recomend this CD4504 part for you application. Thes parts are 10V parts and are very slow and weak at the lower voltages especially when both voltages are low.

If you are only going one direction (5V to 3.3V) then I would recomend a buffer that has 5V tolerant inputs shuch as SN74LV244A. Set Vcc to 3.3V then inputs can be 5V and the ouputs will be dropped to 3.3V.

If you need to go both directions then I would recomend somethin like SN74LVC8T245

Thes are multi-bit parts but if you only need a1 bit or a few bits we would probably have a fit at what ever bit width you need.
