SN74LVC240A Output Voltage

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74LVC240A, SN74LV240A

SN74LVC240A. Question about the "Output" voltage. Page 11 says the output can not exceed the Vcc which is 3.3v. But, page 1 under Features it says  -- Supports Mixed-Mode Signal Operation on All Ports (5-V Input/Output Voltage with 3.3Vcc). Need 5V output.

  • Hi Stephen, This device cannot output 5 V. Buffers like this can only supply an output voltage equal to VCC at most. You could use the SN74LV240A, which can operate at 5V VCC.

  • I am looking for a new design solution for transmitting and receiving 5V/0V over 120ohm Bi-Directional Data Lines cable. In the past have used NS8838 with it’s Open-Collector” driver output for “wired-Or” connection and it’s inverting logic feature.
The SN74LVC240A has the problem with the Output being 3.3V limit and the SN74LV240A has the Input spec of 0 to 5V. We will be feeding it with 0 to 3.3V. Does TI have a surface device solution?
    Thanks,
    Stephen Born
