SN74LVC1G08: Hot Plug Application Support

Part Number: SN74LVC1G08

Hi, Team

A telecom customer want to use SN74LVC1G08 in their base station application. They wonder whether SN74LVC1G08 can support hot plug application (signal is applied to A and B input pins of SN74LVC1G08 and then provide the 3.3V power supply in some case). Could you help on it?

Thanks

Kevin

  • Hi Kevin,

I don't completely understand the application, so I can't comment on if the device can definitely be used or not.  With more details I could probably say one way or the other.(What exactly do you mean by 'hot plug'? What kind of voltage spikes are expected? Is ground connected first? Are data lines precharged? Is there expected overcurrent?)

I can tell you that there are four levels of 'hot plug' protection defined by TI, and they are:

    Level 0 Isolation

Level 1 Isolation (Partial Power Down)

    Level 2 Isolation (Hot Insertion)

    Level 3 Isolation (Live Insertion)

The SN74LVC1G08 has Ioff protection, which places it in the "Level 1" rating.  The datasheet has a mistake on the front page indicating 'Live Insertion' - however Ioff does _not_ provide that capability.  Please see the application report Logic in Live-Insertion Applications With a Focus on GTLP for definitions of each level.
