SmartRF Studio for 64-bit Machines

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2530

I have a CC2530 DK (Rev 1.1) that is sitting, collecting dust. My laptop will not recognize the SmartRF05EB's that come with the kit.  When I called TI customer support for assistance with this problem I was told that the SmartRF Studio tool does not communicate with 64-bit OS's ... which my laptop has. I was told that a driver has not been written "yet" but that TI was aware of the problem and was "working on a fix". (I have been waiting for over six months for a solution .. or even a response for that matter.) I spent big money for a 64-bit machine that would handle my CAD development tools, including 3D mechanical design, that I would need for the product that I am developing ... and now I'm being told that my 1 yr old laptop has too much horsepower for the TI development tools that I specifically need  ?!!  What kind of nonsense is this ?!?

So, does anyone know when (or even IF) TI is going to come out with a 64-bit driver for the RF Studio product ?

Or does anyone know of a work-around to get my Dell 64-bit laptop to recognize the RF05EB ?

Any help on this topic would be GREATLY appreciated ... considering the management at TI does not seem to care.

Regards,

Michael Fenn

  • Many of us are in the same boat.  Ti is saying they are on track for a release before the end of the year and claim it is a major effort due to the number of platforms and tools that it must validate.    http://e2e.ti.com/support/low_power_rf/f/155/p/28667/246455.aspx#246455

Also unique to W-7 64 is it will only load signed drivers. I know from exprience Microsoft is very slow at "signing" drivers once they are submitted.

( Ref W-7 64 only:  Just for reference during boot up via the F8 key on the Safe Mode screen the last option is to proceed with unsigned drivers. It does not help with the Ti drivers but is useful in other cases.)

  • Mr. H Stewart,

Thank-you for responding to my post. You have eased my anger (but not my disappointment at TI) a bit by confirming to me that there are others in our community that share my pain wrt this topic. Although, not exactly the response that I was hoping for, it at least gives me some sort of hope that TI is doing something about this very serious situation. I look forward to seeing what TI will provide.

Question : Are you an employee or close affiliate of TI ? I'm curious where you got this information .

    Regards,

    Mike

  • I'm not an employee or close affiliate of TI. I'm a just forum member. Ti's leadership supports a staff to provide eval board designs, reference designs, app notes and other documentation as well as hosting this forum. Its great, so I use their products when possible.

The source of the information are postings from Ti employees on this forum, including one I provided in the link in this thread.

Disappointment is a good choice of words, of a very long list of tools (MATLAB, Solidworks, Altium, XILINX ISE, etc) ccDebugger is the only thing that required us to roll new i7 work stations back from W-7 64 to XP 32 bit.

  • Hi Michael,

We will be releasing this very soon and the release is still scheduled before the end of this year.

Understand fully the frustration of not being able to use a 64-bit machine with various software.

Please use the community for any technical questions and as a reference source since there are many skilled engineers in the community providing excellent feedback.

    Regards,   Richard.

  • Hi - New drivers for 64 bit versions of Windows are now available. You can download them from http://www.ti.com/lit/zip/swrc212.

  • Thanks!  This new 64-bit driver fixed my problem with getting SmartRF04EB recognized.

  • hi all

I installed the drivers on my 64 bits machine and W7 sees the RF05 board connected, but the IAR IDE when going to debug mode doesn't see the RF05 board connected.

where can I download  IAR EW8051 7.51 latest patches

  • You can get the latest patches form IAR by logging in to "My Pages" (use the "Login to My Pages" link).

If you only have the Kickstart version or the Evaluation license, use the other link, saying: "To view your free Evaluation and KickStart editions: Login here"
    http://supp.iar.com/MyPages/

    You should use patch 7.51M.
