What platform is best for my application?

I have a simple industrial control system using fiber optic transmitters and receivers to link my system. I just found out about Zigbee and the wireless idea seems to interest me, but there is too much information to determine what platform or device to begin to consider. Where do I start? Simple control: push a button here, get an action there; same in reverse. Need to be looking at 2.4GHz. Thanks

How many nodes are there in your system? How many should be able to communicate with how many?

My application would be like a private conversation between just two people walking down the street. Just a two way conversation with three commands going one way and one command going the other way. Presently I am using four separate optical fibers for the job and would like to convert the whole process to RF.
