F28069M eCAN module

Hi.  I'm primarily having trouble getting the CANGIM register in the eCAN module to set the values I write to it.  I do have the protected register write mode enabled when I write to it, but still no effect.  Also, I tried the interrupt scheming sequence presented in the user guide, where CANMIM (interrupt mask) and CANMIL (interrupt level) are set first before CANGIM, but still nothing.  Is there any additional sequences I need to follow prior to setting the CANGIM register?  Thanks.
