New Piccolo?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320F28075, LAUNCHXL-F28027, CONTROLSUITE

  hi,

Can someone from Texas tell us if there will be a new Piccolo release still in this year? Or Piccolo is NRND because it cannot compete with the price/performance of the Cortex-M4?

F2837xS is a great release, but expensive for most  applications. I'm hoping for a Piccolo version of the F2837x, with the same Flash Technology and peripherals, but with less pincount, less memory and less expensive. Is that possible to happen soon?

  Ari.

  • Hello Ari,

Thanks for your question.  No the Piccolo line is not NRND and it is very popular with customers who are doing real-time control applications.  Today we continue to see many MCUs in this family designed into well recognized customer projects such as white goods, motor control, solar inverters, PLC, etc.

In response to your comment about a Piccolo version of the F2837xS we do have something cooking in the background which will be announced soon (before year end).  Stay tuned as I am sure you'll like this announcement.

  • Loretta,

Very thanks for your answer. It is all I need to know, that I will have a new Piccolo to play with.

     Ari.

  • Ari,

I thought you'd like to know that we announced the new Piccolo product today.

    Enjoy!

  • Thanks for the update, Adam. Do highlight the same as sticky notes on the forum.

  • I'm wondering if will be available an starter kit like de piccolo F28027 with Ethernet

    Regards

    Gastón

  • Gaston,

Are you referring to the F28027 MCU having a starter kit with Ethernet or the new F2807x MCUs having Ethernet?

    Loretta

  •  Hi,

Can you tell us if is there are plans for lower cost parts, F28071, F28072 and F28073?

There will be a Fixed point Piccolo F2804x to complete the Piccolo series F2802x/3x/5x/6x/7x?

I think that Texas should release a Piccolo with the same flash technology and peripherals of the F28x7x but with 64 to 80 pins, fixed point and less memory to lower the cost.

Also would be great a Cortex-M4 with the F2807x ADC, ePWM, HRPWM and analog comparator.

     Ari.

  • Hi Ari,

As of now we do not currently have plans for lower cost derivatives of the F2807x MCUs.  The F2807x devices are based on a 32-bit floating point C28x CPU and moving forward, all MCUs from the C2000 product line will also be based floating point architecture.

At this point I can't confirm or deny that we have an F2804x MCU planned.  I will only suggest that you continue to look out for more great MCU annuoncements from C2000.  We recognize that lots of customers are interested in many of the unique features that we're putting in the F28x7x family but at a lower cost point and we have some exciting things we're working towards.

    Please stay tuned!

    Loretta

  • F2807x with ethernet and a few gpio's outputs (like the F28027 controlSTICK). The only starter kits availables are the TMDXDOCK28075 and TMDXCNCD28075 without ethernet.

    Regards

    Gastón

  • Gaston,

We don't currently have such a kit planned.  I will give you a heads up that we're looking to develop a low cost development kit which will be available early next year.

    Loretta

  • Loretta,

I was just asking because neither of the Kits available have ethernet connection.

    Regards

    Gastón

  • Gaston,

Not a problem I do understand.  We do not have ethernet connection on this kit as we don't have an ethernet peripheral on this device so it's not a peripheral we want to highlight.

    Loretta

  • Loretta,

the datasheet says : "USB 2.0 + PHY Port ". I'm more interested in the PHY Port.

    Regards

    Gastón

  • That's the USB PHY not Ethernet PHY.

    Loretta

  • Loretta,

So, are there plans for a F2807x LaunchPad next year?

       Ari

Launchpad term has been assigned with F28027 & F28027F part numbers only as of now. Btw F2807x already has an experimenter's kit available on the TI eStore.

  • Ari, Gautam,

We are looking at a LaunchPad for the F2807x for next year.  Like Gautam mentioned, right now the evaluation kit for the F2807x is the experimenter's kit.

  • Hallo Loretta,

I am trying to connect my LAUNCHXL-F28027 C2000 Piccolo LaunchPad

Experimenter Kit  with Matlab Simulink (Vesion MATLAB R2014a). I am really facing problems. Is there any way to see which steps i need to follow , in order to connect it properly and be able to flash my Simulink in the C2000?

I think even the Code Composer Studio 6, is not for that type of Matlab connection.

    Thanks ,

    John

  • Dear John

I suggest you take a look at the following video:

    http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/45124-motor-control-with-ti-launchpad

Skip to 2:58 for installation steps. We use a makefile approach to create the executable and we use the CCS debug server to load it on the target. You can follow the installation steps for CCSv5 and point to CCSv6. The only thing we need is a way to find the compiler you want to use and the debug server location. In that respect there is no difference between ccsv5 and ccsv6, just point to the folder location you prefer.

There are 3 MATLAB commands to remember that will help you with the installation steps:

targetinstaller (to install the support package).

targetupdater (to point to your 3rd party tools' folders, this is automatically launched as part of targetinstaller but can be run separately)

CheckEnvSetup (make sure to call it with 'ccsv5' for proper feedback).

    I hope it helps,

    Antonin for MathWorks

  • Dear Antonin ,

thank you for your answer- help, but there are still 2 problems to face.

when i write to matlab command window : targetinstaller (to install the support package).
then i get a window that says : Select toolchain
    Select your CCS toolchain
    toolchain: TI CCS V3.3 (C2000)
    TI CCS V4 (C2000)
    TI CCS V5 (C2000)

There is nothing to choose about ccs V6 , that i have to my pc installed.

    Second Problem :
when i write to matlab command window : checkEnvSetup('cccv5','f28027','check') ,
    i get the following error.....

    Error using checkEnvSetup_private (line 12)
Unsupported IDE "cccv5". Use 'ccs' for CCSv3.3 or 'ccsv4' for CCSv4.

    Error in checkEnvSetup (line 155)
    checkEnvSetup_private(varargin{:});

I tried to install everything with CCSV5 to see if it is working simply like that, but nothing achieved!

    Thank you for your help,
    John
  • Dear John,
For the tool chain, during the installation, select TI CCS V5 and point to the CCSv6 folder. Like I said, MATLAB only needs to find the compiler and the debug server which are located in the same folder hierarchy in CCSv5 and CCSv6.
In checkEnvSetup, it looks like you pass the wrong string (cccv5 instead of ccsv5).
    Call the following function:
    checkEnvSetup('ccsv5','f28027','check')
    That should work.
    Thanks,
    Antonin.
  • Hallo Antonin,

    thank you for your help.
I still face some problems , while trying to run a simple model of simulink.

i did the steps i saw to the video.

checkEnvSetup('ccsv5', 'F28027', 'check') gives me the following :

    1. CCSv5 (Code Composer Studio)
    Your version :
    Required version: 5.0 or later
    Required for : Code Generation
    TI_DIR=""

    2. CGT (Texas Instruments C2000 Code Generation Tools)

    6. Flash Tools (TMS320F2802x Piccolo(TM) Flash API)
    Your version : 2.01a

    Required for : Flash Programming
    FLASH_2802X_API_INSTALLDIR="C:\ti\controlSUITE\libs\utilities\flash_api\2802x\v201a"

and now i created a simple model of simulink
and i while i am trying to build it , i get the following error...

"The call to idelink_ert_make_rtw_hook, during the entry hook generated the following error:
Could not connect to the board specified in the Target Hardware Resources tab on the Coder Target pane in the Configuration Parameters dialog.

The build process will terminate as a result.

Could not connect to the board specified in the Target Hardware Resources tab on the Coder Target pane in the Configuration Parameters dialog.

Could not obtain board configuration from Code Composer Studio(TM). Make sure that Code Composer Studio is installed and properly registered.

Cannot start CCS application (COM error ID: 0x80040154). Verify that your CCS software is installed and configured properly."

Any idea what is wrong and what shall i do ?

    Thank you,
    John
