HVPSFB CC in parallel with HVPSFB non-CC

I have two HVPSFB units.  I can run them independently in regular PCMC mode and in constant current(CC) mode.  However, when I connect their output together to the same load, the CC unit will no longer supply constant current output.  It seems like the presence of the correct output voltage as generated by the unit in PCMC non-CC mode confounds the unit in constant current mode.  Any ideas?  Thanks!!!

  • When you are using CC mode in of the PSFB modules, the other one cannot be in constant voltage mode. Both have to be in the same mode.

  • Shamim, thank you for your response. Can you please explain? It is our intention to use the cc Hvpsfb to boost the current supply and the other Hvpsfb to supply constant voltage. Why is it not possible? Thanks! -Anne
  • The way you are trying to operate the two supplies may create some conflict. The CC supply will try to maintain its current regardless of the output voltage. But the effect on the output voltage will be sensed by the other supply under voltage mode control and, so, it will adjust its current accordingly. So I am not sure whether you can actually get current boost that you are trying to achieve.

To get the current boost you have to run both supplies in voltage mode with an additional load current balancing loop for each supply.

CC mode is usually entered when the total load current demand is higher than the total current that the two supplies can deliver. At that point both supplies should go to CC mode.
