Good morning,

I'm trying to program a TMS320F28069 microcontroller using a C2000 Gang Programmer. I've already programmed the device using the UniFlash program, so I've confirmed that the micro is still healthy. I am powering the micro with an external supply and I've confirmed that it has a clean +3.3V input. For what other reasons may this error be present?

One other piece of information, when selecting 'Supplied by Programmer Voltage = 3.3V' (pin 5 is left unconnected and using an external supply), I see the messages

Can you try enabling this programmer to supply the required voltage instead of external supply?

Hi Gautam,

Thanks for the reply. I did try using the internal supply, but it pulls ~150mA, which I know is close to the supply limit. The error message returned are

Any suggestions as to what causes this error?

Hi Chris,

Can you provide part of schematic related to JTAG communication with MCU? How the TCK (pin 11) and /RST (pin 2) are connected?

Hi Gautam,

I have the ground from the 14 pin connector on the GANG-2000 connected to the ground of my power supply. Is there any other grounds that I need to tie together?

Hi Chris,

You need only ground from the 14-pins connector (pins 4,6,8,10,12) connected to your target device and your power supply. These GND pins are the same as the GND pin marked on the J10 of the Gang Splitter. No other ground is required. Make sure that the ribbon cable is used for JTAG connection between C2000-GANG and your targets.

Hi Gregory,

Thank you for the feedback. I am not using the ribbon cable but instead individually connecting JTAG signals to my board, in order to gain access to the additional ground signals.

Any suggestions based on my schematic?

Hi Chris,

I noticed that you do not have populated the R8. It would be recommended to add 3.3k. What JTAG cable you have between C2000-GANG and target device? Is it flat ribbon cable?

Hi Gregory,

I added a 3.3kOhm resistor but this didn't have any affect. I currently have the two connectors jumpered individually. I'm not using a ribbon cable. Do you have any other suggestions?

I just switched to the C2000-GANG provided cables but found the same error. What does error code 23 (MCU device init) entail? In what cases could I see this error?

Hi Chris,

Error 23 means that the communication initialization with target failed. It can be the communication problem (connection, power, on the JTAG lines etc).

Good morning Gregory,

Thanks for all of your help on this project. I've switched to using an off-the-shelf TI development kit for the TMS320F28069M microcontroller. I have the C2000-GANG directly connected to the JTAG header on the DRV8301-HC-EVM evaluation module, and I'm using a TMS320F28069M control card.

I'm seeing the exact same error using the development kit. Based on this result, it must either be a problem with my settings or perhaps a bad programmer?

Hi Chris,
That can be also the issue. Can you make the self test ( Tools->Self Test) and email me the test result to email
gregory@elprotronic.com.
Make sure that the test is done without any targets connected to programmer.

Hi Chris,

The mentioned evaluation board from TI with F28069M MCU has build in debugger with DC isolation between MCU and PC. The external debugger option is disabled in that evaluation board. From that reason you cannot get communication with C2000-GANG. See description in the cCARD's infosheet (* This controlCARD is designed to be debugged via the on-card emulator. JTAG ports on the docking station or any other baseboard will not be able to connect to the MCU *).

When you use your own wiring instead flat ribbon cable between C2000-GANG programmer and your target board, make sure that the data wires and TCK wire are well isolated to avoid crosstalk between wires. Specially check if there no coupling between TCK and TDO wires. In the flat ribbon cable these all wires are isolate by inserted the wires connected to GND between signal and CLK wires.

I directly connected the flat ribbon cable from the C2000-GANG to my prototype board and this fixed the problem. I'm now able to program using the gang programmer. Thank you for all your support on this issue.
