Hi.

I need to design a new PCB to control 4 BLDC motors.

The 4 motors are 10A 36V maximum.

The old design we use has only 2 motors and it uses the TMS320F28335.

The maximum performance of the motors is 1 turn 360Deg CW and 1 360Deg CCW cycles in 20Hz.

My questions are:

1) Could I use the InstaSpin library to control all 4 motors with the same MCU and get the performance needed?

2) What is the most suitable MCU?

3) What evaluation boards are recommended to best evaluate the new design

1. It looks like you are doing servo position control, so neither InstaSPIN-BLDC nor InstaSPIN-FOC would be appropriate (they are commutation / torque / velocity only). InstaSPIN-MOTION offers position control but is only available on a device like F28069M which can do only 2-axis (from a HW standpoint and a ROM software standpoint).
2. Considering you are using F28335 already, I would evaluate the TMS320F28377D device. This is the follow-up to F28335 and will be nearly 100% code compatible. This is the superset version with 2x 200 MHz 28x FPU cores. It may be appropriate or it may be a bit overkill, in which case there is the F28377S single core version (basically the direct upgrade for F28335).
3. There are Experimenter Kits (MCU controlCARD that plugs into a breadboard) available for the F28377D that you should start with.

OK - to summarize:

I need one F28377D Delfino Experimenter Kit (http://www.ti.com/tool/tmdxdock28377d)

and 4 BOOSTXL-DRV8301 (http://www.ti.com/tool/boostxl-drv8301

Am I correct?

Then I need to wire the 4 boards to the Docking Station of the Delfino ?

I'm not 100% sure that the dock28377d has all the pins brought out you would need. A quick glance after installing controlSUITE at:
C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\~controlCARDs\TMDSCNCD28377D_v1_2\R1_1

looks like only 2x QEP are available.

I think you will need to create a fully customized PCB for 4 axis, but you could start with testing a single axis (or 2) with the docking station.

Note on the BOOSTXL-DRV8301 that it only has the 3x shunt currents measured. If your control technique relies on a total bus current you will want to look at a different EVM like the DRV8301-HC-C2-KIT

Hi David,

Unfortunately not.

It is often difficult to move any design into Cadence's format that wasn't natively done there. There are a few specialty software tools that have the ability to do conversions - for a price though. You're obviously then counting on that tool to do the conversion correctly as well.
