DVR8301-69M kit fault information

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8301, MOTORWARE, INSTASPINUNIVERSALGUI

I have the DVR8301-69M kit and I'm having a fault latch when running the motor at 17,000rpms in the instaspin motion GUI.  At lower rpm's the motor runs just fine, but at 17,000 rpm's and above the DVR8301 pulls a fault and latches.  I don't see any fault information in the instaspin GUI.  Is there a GUI available that will show me the detailed fault information that is sent from the DVR8301 SPI?  Is there an example code composer project that is setup to read and display the fault information reported by the DVR8301?

  • Use the INSTASPINUVERSALGUI and the MotorWare projects. There is a tab on that GUI for DRV8301 reporting.

The DRV8301 EVM is not a very good layout. The current sense picks up a bunch of switching noise. I would suggest limiting to 15 KHz PWM switching.
Even still, at over 50% modulation the current feedback starts getting more distorted.
Coupled with that the over-modulation algorithm that is currently released is not perfect (we have a new version coming that improves) and you start to run into issues when Vs approaches and goes larger than 1.0 (using proj_lab10)

Assuming all of your motor parameters are reasonable, this is likely the culprit. Improved layout will be the biggest improvement, and then a new overmodulation algorithm will make it even better at maximum speeds.
  • I only see a fault status light and reset in the GUI. Is there something in the GUI that shows more detail on what the exact fault is? Can you send a picture? The fault that I am getting does not reset when I press the fault reset on the GUI. It only resets after restarting the system and then pressing the fault reset button on the GUI. I would like to know what the exact fault is.
  • use INSTASPINUNIVERSALGUI and the MotorWare projects as I've suggested.
