InstaSpin FOC PMSM CTRL goes to CTRL_State_Offline

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MOTORWARE, TMDSCNCD28027F, DRV8301, DRV8312, BOOSTXL-DRV8301

Greetings -

I am working my way through the MotorWare Lab 2b in CCS.

I am at the point of attempting to start the motor identification process.  I can change gMotorVars.Flag_enableSys to '1' and observe the results of the update.  I can also update gMotorVars.Flag_Run_Identify  to '1'.  On setting the Flag_Run_Identify flag, the drive immediately changes gMotorVars.CtrlState from 'CTRL_State_Idle' to 'CTRL_State_Offline'.

I have turned off optimizations so that the debugger might give me more clear information.  The below code comes from 'ctrl.c', starting at line 719:

                  if(EST_isMotorIdentified(obj->estHandle))
                    {
                      if(CTRL_getFlag_enableOffset(handle))
                        {
                          // set the next controller state
                          CTRL_setState(handle,CTRL_State_OffLine);
                        }
                      else
                        {
                          // set the next controller state
                          CTRL_setState(handle,CTRL_State_OnLine);
                        }
                    }
                  else
                    {
                      // set the next controller state
                      CTRL_setState(handle,CTRL_State_OffLine);   // <------- this is being executed
                    }

I am setting the breakpoint at 'if(EST_isMotorIdentified...', but - on stepping through - it appears that the 'EST_isMotorIdentified()' is not being executed at all.  The stepping function simply goes from the if statement into 'CTRL_setState(handle, CTRL_State_Offline)'.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

  • moving to Offline is the correct state. Please read SPRUHJ1 chapter 6 and review the state diagrams.
    don't add breakpoints....just follow the lab.
  • Thank you for your response.

    I was following the lab exactly and the CTRL goes to CTRL_StateOffline and does *nothing* after that. The lab states that the drive should attempt to identify the motor, but that isn't happening. What am I missing?

    j
  • my guess is you have the timing set-up incorrectly. please drag and drop your user.h file in a full reply (Use rich formatting)

    and make sure you are using the project that corresponds to your specific EVM

    and make sure you are NOT using CCS 6.1.3

  • 1. 'user.h' is below
    2. I have the correct project for the board that I am using
    3. I uninstalled CCS v6.1.3 and installed CCS v6.1.2

    I am still getting the same behavior. I suspect that you are correct, I must have some timing incorrectly set up, but I am using the values as suggested by the spreadsheet.

    The motor doesn't move at all.

    j
  • are you using TMDSCNCD28027F with DRV8301 EVM? You have an external emulator as well?

    "I have had to change the voltage filter capacitors, so the high rotor frequency in the below defines is accurate."
    what does this mean? I don't see any change to your voltage filter pole or ADC_FULL_SCALE_VOLTAGE

    yes, revert off 6.1.3
    requires installation of previous versions
    processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Download_CCS
  • and which motor are you using? user.h says the ANAHEIM motor (which ships with DRV8312 kits)
  • I believe that I somehow posted the 'default' user.h file when I was trying different labs.

    I have updated the user.h file with the appropriate information.  I am using a custom IPM type motor, which I am calling "AMP45_DC_EH":

    #elif (USER_MOTOR == AMP45_DC_EH)
    #define USER_MOTOR_TYPE 				MOTOR_Type_Pm
    #define USER_MOTOR_NUM_POLE_PAIRS 		(2)
    #define USER_MOTOR_Rr 					(NULL)
    #define USER_MOTOR_Rs 					(NULL)
    #define USER_MOTOR_Ls_d 				(NULL)
    #define USER_MOTOR_Ls_q 				(NULL)
    #define USER_MOTOR_RATED_FLUX 			(0)
    #define USER_MOTOR_MAGNETIZING_CURRENT 	(NULL)
    #define USER_MOTOR_RES_EST_CURRENT 		(1.0)
    #define USER_MOTOR_IND_EST_CURRENT 		(-1.0)
    #define USER_MOTOR_MAX_CURRENT 			(6.0)
    #define USER_MOTOR_FLUX_EST_FREQ_Hz 	(20.0)

  • when you reply hit Use rich formatting
    then drag and drop the actual user.h that is being compiled in your project
  • in the last user.h you posted (then deleted) for a BOOSTXL-DRV8301 board you would need to change
    #define USER_NUM_PWM_TICKS_PER_ISR_TICK (3)

    and the voltage filter of 2 KHz is much too high. There was no reason to change this from the default

    #define USER_VOLTAGE_FILTER_POLE_Hz (2000.0) // 364.682, value for boostxldrv8301_revB hardware
  • I'm so sorry for the confusion with the user.h file.

    So I was working through the spreadsheet and - in order to get all True down the right column - I had to change the USER_NUM_PWM_TICKS_PER_ISR_TICK to '1' or '2'.  Neither of them worked.

    Additionally, I have a rotor frequency of up to 1866Hz, so the reason that I changed the USER_VOLTAGE_FILTER_POLE_Hz to 2kHz is b/c I changed the filter capacitors on the DRV8301 to have a 2kHz pole.  Are you saying that I should change them back and - if I do change them - I can still expect a rotor frequency in the 1866Hz range?

    Thanks again,

    j

  • So, I changed the cap back to the 364Hz pole and I did get some spinning.  The motor identified and appears to be working.  I'll consider this issue closed and will upvote your last response.

    Thank you so much for your assistance!  I'll continue working through the labs and will post a new issue if I run into any other roadblocks.  Thanks again,

    j

  • for an 1866 Hz motor (wow, that is REALLY high) I would design the filter pole for 500 Hz and make sure you use as high precision capacitors as possible. 500 Hz lets you set USER_IQ_FULL_SCALE_FREQUENCY to (2000.0)

    I would also experiment with increasing this value up to 1000.0, which will help with high speeds and accelerations
    #define USER_SPEED_POLE_rps (100.0)
