DRV8301-HC-C2-KIT: Urgent!

Part Number: DRV8301-HC-C2-KIT

Hello, I have ordered two DRV8301-HC-C2-KIT's.  I have had them for months and I am still unable to open the instaspin software to be able to program them.  I have a MacBook Pro and it tells me that it is unable to open a windows program.  I downloaded winebottler which is supposed to change any windows program into a Mac application.  It still can not do it.  It tells me that this program can not open because of the format.  I need the instapin program that is able to open on a mac....I have tried everything.  This is a very urgent matter for me as I have a serious deadline.  Please help ASAP.

Thank you,

Tim.

  • Did you download the mac os installer from processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Download_CCS
  • There's also an offline Mac OS installer at processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Download_CCS
  • Sorry... I thought you were trying to install CCS.

Did you download the CONTROLSUITE-ZIP file. Then try the linux installation method at processors.wiki.ti.com/.../ControlSUITE_Linux_Installation

Do you have any access to a windows machine. If so so you can install it on that machine and then copy the files over to the mac computer.
  • Also, the following wiki seems to suggest what I said about installing the controlsuite on windows and copying the files over to the Mac, i.e.

    from http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MacOS_X_CCSv6_Beta:

    Working with TI software packages

    • MSPWare is currently not available in CCS App Center, but can be downloaded and installed separately from http://www.ti.com/tool/MSPWARE. There is a MacOS specific installer available there.
    • Other packages (TivaWare, Controlsuite, BLE Stack etc.) do not have Mac installers. You can install the software on Windows and copy the contents over to Mac.
  • Hi Tim,

Were you able to find a Windows machine to open the .exe from?

    Sean
  • Hello Sean,

I did go get a windows computer, but the program just showed pages of txt and no program would load up.  I talked to Jim Dennison about this again, he told me I had to download CCS to get the program to open.  I downloaded CCS but CCS will not open.  It asks me to find a program that will open it, but none of the programs on my computer will, and if I ask it to look on the internet for a program, it gives me random choices, even home depot.  Please Help.  I need this to open to program these today.

    Thank you,

    Tim

  • You need to add the .exe to the end of the file name.

Before you do so, make sure extensions of known file types are not hidden. You can do so by selecting the Tools->folder options->view in windows explorer and make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.

    Stephen

  • Also, you might want to disable the antivirus software before you install the program. If you have any issues with the web install, you might want to download the off-line installer.
    Stephen
  • How do I add .exe to the file name? I have now downloaded the motorware, CCS, MSP430 ware , disabled my antivirus and still I can not get any of this to even open. I just need the instaspin program to open so I can program these expensive parts. Not one of the suggestions that I have received to download will actually work. What program will open any of this? I am so confused at this point why it isn't just a simple program that opens. TI claims that it takes 20 seconds to program these with the instaspin. How do you get the program to open?
  • just right click on the file and select rename. However, make sure extensions to known file types is enabled as mentioned above.

    Stephen.

  • I am not sure why it downloaded without a .exe extension. Sometimes that has happened to me. You might want to try and download it again, but first delete the existing file.
  • I am not sure what your knowledge of windows is, so I'll mention that for you to delete the file, you need to click on it and select delete from the keyboard.
  • I just downloaded the web installer and it downloaded with the .exe extension.
  • Hello Tim,

were you able to get it work?

    Stephen
  • Hello Steven, I have tried to download it again after removing the last one, still no exe, and when I rename it with .exe, it still does nothing. It will not download with the exe on it. I tried four times. I am no longer able to attach what I am looking at on this forum. It looks like there is no option to.
  • Hello Steven,

I could not get the CCS to open or do anything on the windows computer...I went back to the Mac.  I got the CCS to download on the Mac.  But I still can not get the Motorware or the Controlsuite to anything.  All three programs installed, but there is no instaspin software to be able to program these Kits.  What do I do from here?

    Thanks, Tim

  • Hello Tim,

So, you were able to install CCS on the MAC?

I am not familiar with instaspin software. Is it an executable or a project that you need to build? Could you please describe your setup.

    Thanks,
    Stephen
  • It is possible that your company's network security disabled or modified the CCS installation executable in some way; However, file does seem to have the correct size.  Maybe it just removed the exe extension.  Are you sure that the antivirus was disabled when you double clicked on the executable.  I know avast virus has a time limit for disabling the antivirus.   It is possible the antivirus and/or firewall are stopping the executable from running.

Also, did you make sure "hide file extensions of known file types" was unchecked.

Anyways, it seems you were able to get the MAC CCS installed so maybe it really doesn't matter.

  • I found the following directories in control suite that were associated with your kit:
    C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV830x-HC-C2-KIT_v105\InstaSPIN_BLDC
    C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV830x-HC-C2-KIT_v105\PM_Sensorless
    C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV830x-HC-C2-KIT_v105\GUI_project_InstaSPIN_BLDC
    C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV830x-HC-C2-KIT_v105\~GUI
    C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV830x-HC-C2-KIT_v105\~DRV830x-HC-EVM-HWdevPkg
    C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV830x-HC-C2-KIT_v105\~Docs

    Did you find those directories?
  • Hello Tim,

Did you get it to work?

    Stephen

  • Hello Steven,

I'm not sure what you are asking me to do.  Is this yet another download you want me to download?  I have controlsuite, motorware, CCS and none of them have the actual instaspin program that programs these.  How do I get INSTASPIN for my kit?  I REALLY need help here, this is supposed to be so simple that it takes 20 seconds to program.  This is why I bought these.  I have NEVER had any issues with downloading any programs or getting them to run.  This has been a nightmare.  I have a serious deadline, and nothing suggested has helped.  I don't know what to do at this point.

    Please Help.

    Tim

  • I did not get anything to bring up the instaspin program. What do I do after installing CCS? How do I get it to run the controlsuite or the motorware? I am so confused, there are now three different programs that I have downloaded and none of them have the program so far. Why can't I just download Instaspin to program these, and have it work? What do I do with CCS?
  • Hello Tim,

I don't know anything about that development kit or instaspin. Were you able to install controlsuite? There is a control suite offline installer at www.ti.com/.../controlsuite. It has those directories I previously posted. Those directories contain projects that you can build using CCS. Once you build the programs, you can download them to your kit. I am thinking the kit probably already has a xds100v2 (i.e. jtag emulator) built on the board and the kit comes with a USB cable that you can use to program the kit.

Those directories also contain other information about the kit. It wouldn't be good for me to post the content of those directories online since they require an export agreement.

I'll send a message to someone at TI to help you further.

    Stephen

  • Once you start up CCS, go to file->import and select the directory that contains the project that you want. That will import the project into CCS.

I am not at my work computer right now so I can't give you too much more information, however, try to find build in one of the menu items to build the project. After building the project, you will want to debug it.

    Stephen
  • After selecting import, select CCS Projects and then next. Then, browse to the directory that has the project and select Finish.

Once the project is imported, select Project->Build.

After the CCS has completed the build, select File>New->Target Configuration File and select Finish. Select XDS100V2 as the connection and then select your target from the list.

Connect the USB cable to the kit and then select Run->Debug (Before doing so make sure CCS is in CCS Edit mode (not CCS Debug mode) as shown in the upper right hand corner of the CCS window.)

You can test the target connection by selecting Test Connection from the same dialog window.

    Stephen

  • I am assuming you already read this: www.ti.com/.../sprabn7.pdf.
  • That document says you should use XDS100V1 instead of XDS100V2 .
  • Tim,
I'm not sure where you are stuck at now, but this comment by you threw up some red flags for me
"Why can't I just download Instaspin to program these, and have it work? What do I do with CCS?"

That isn't how this works. This solution is an algorithm and control system that you implement with additional control software and your system software. This is not plug in your motor to the board and it magically does everything you need.

This is a starting point for a control system engineer to create an embedded motor control system.

CCS is the development environment to create your embedded software project. controlSUITE is a distribution package that has example software projects, additional software components and examples for you to take advantage of, and documentation.

MotorWare is similar to controlSUITE but is specific to our InstaSPIN-FOC and -MOTION solutions. Your EVM doesn't support these solutions, so no need to think about this one.
  • Hello Steven,

I am stuck at browse the directory that has the project.  I just need to open instaspin.  I do not have a project to import into this that makes any sense.  Do I need to choose motorware?  Or controlsuite?  Or both?  What "project am I importing to get the instaspin program to open so I can program my controllers?

  • I am not that familiar with your kit or instaspin, so ChrisClearman would be best to help you.

Use www.ti.com/.../sprabn7.pdf and flash the InstaSPIN-BLDC_GUI_DRV8301_v104.out file in C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV830x-HC-C2-KIT_v105\~GUI directory. Flashing the out file is described in section 2.2 (starting on page 3). Then run InstaSPIN-BLDC_GUI_DRV83xx_v104.exe in that same directory.

    Stephen
  • InstaSPIN-BLDC_GUI_DRV83xx_v104.exe is a windows executable.
  • What exactly do I choose to import into CCS?  It is not allowing me to push next.

  • this is the source project for the binary file used with the InstaSPIN-BLDC GUI
    C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV830x-HC-C2-KIT_v105\GUI_project_InstaSPIN_BLDC

this is the source for a baseline project for InstaSPIN-BLDC, what you would start with to develop your own project (this also has a docs folder with a user's guide)

    C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV830x-HC-C2-KIT_v105\InstaSPIN_BLDC

there are some additional labs/training for InstaSPIN-BLDC here
    www.ti.com/.../instaspin-bldc

    best of luck
  • That's definitely not the control suite directory. It looks like it's a combination of the windows root directory (C:) and a listing of all the drives. However, the Program Files folder is very sparse.

I think controlsuite is usually installed at C:\ti\controlSUITE, but that is not showing up on your drive_c.

How are you getting those directories to show up on your MacBook Pro?

The out file for the instaspin GUI example is contained in the C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV830x-HC-C2-KIT_v105\~GUI directory.

    Stephen
  • If you don't have access to windows, maybe you should try running linux on virtualbox (www.virtualbox.org/.../Downloads and select OS X host)

    Also , see processors.wiki.ti.com/.../ControlSUITE_Linux_Installation.

    Stephen
  • Hello Tim,

Did you get it to work?
