    I want to enable the internal watchdog for a project which uses the MSP430F5419, but I don't know how to disable it for JTAG debug / program purposes.  I've searched and read through the forums, but haven't found anything that answers this question directly.  Thanks in advance for your help!

      WDTCTL = WDTPW + WDTHOLD;

      stops the watchdog.

      So I would do 2 versions of your code, one for debug, with the WDT stopped, and one with the WDT active. How the WDT functions is written down in the FamilyUser Guide of your controller.

      Thanks sed, I do plan on using two different builds.  As i understand it, if code which enables and uses the WDT is loaded, it is impossible to reprogram and debug via JTAG.  Is that correct?

      In the past we have used an external hardware jumper that the software can look at to determine if the WDT should be enabled or not.  But we didn't decide to use the WDT until after the boards were fabricated so that's currently not an option.

      Hi jdr,

      JTAG should take control of the device even if WDT is enabled. The JTAG device would force a Reset and disable Watchdog when reprogramming the device. You can find more info here: http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slau320d/slau320d.pdf

      Debuggers (CCS,IAR) also have the option to disable some clocks during debugging (i.e. when stopping the MCU, or single-stepping though the code, the Watchdog will stop running).

      Regards,

      Luis R

      Yes and no. It depends on the MSP whether and ot which extent this feature is available. The WDT, however, has a fallback on some MSPs to VLO, which cannot be deactivated at all.

      Setting a global define 'DEBUG' in the project setting (debug configuration), adn then putting an #ifdef into the code that disables the wdt if this define is set, will produce code that can be debugged in debug mode, and uses the WDT in release mode.
