    MSP430 LaunchPad stopped working

    Hello,

I've read a lot of treads about this issue, but I still can't figure out what is wrong with my launchpad.

It has worked fine for about 2 months. A few days ago, when I tried to download new code to my MSP430G2553 I first got the following message: "MSP430: Error initializing emulator: Could not find MSP-FET430UIF on specified COM port"   Since then I get this error every time I try to download code on my both microcontrollers.

I also tried using IAR embedded workbench but I get following errors:

Fatal error: Failed to initialize device. Session aborted!
Fatal error: Unknown exception in driver (#M2) Session aborted!
    Failed to load debugee: C:\Users\David\Documents\Debug\Exe\ddd.d43
I also tried using that launchpad on one different computer but the result is always the same.
Do I have to buy a new launchpad or do you have any advice how to fix that problem?
    Thanks,
    David

Might be a silly suggestion but have you tried a different USB cable? Other than that-- there's an LED on the board called "LED0". Does it light up when you connect the launchpad? What does the computer say under the "attached USB devices" in control panel->system? Does it recognize the device as a JTAG emulator?

      Thank you for the response.

Yes, I tried three different USB cables, but the result was always the same. LED0 always light up when I connect the launchpad and code that is already on microcontoller starts running correctly.

I checked "devices and printers" in control panel I found  "Texas Instruments MSP-FET430UIF".

When I plug in the LaunchPad on my computer, Device Manager adds "MSP430 Application UART (COM3)" under "PORTS" and "USB Input Device" and "HID-Compllant Device" under "Human Interface Devices".

I noticed another strange thing, which probably isn't directly connected to my problem. If I plug the launchpad in my computer with microcontroller that I've always used, the computer detects it every time. But if I plug it in with another microcontroller that came with the launchpad, which has no code on, it detects it only maybe once in ten times.

Oooh, wow, so the problem is intermittent then and manifests itself with a blank MSP430 device only, right? Well I guess you need to try it with a new and identical MSP430 device to the one that came with the launchpad. I'm really guessing here now but you may have zapped the original chip with static-- easy to do on a dry day and weather's been pretty dry for a few days-- at least here in UK.

      Hi David Cufer,

I've had a similar problem sometime ago and got this error, using IAR:

Fatal error: Failed to initialize device. Session aborted!

I tried lots of things, include uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them, but never fixed it. So, onde day, I remove the chip from the socket and put it again and did work. I guess I did not connect the chip correctly. I dont know, but you can try this.

      Cya =)

Thank you for your responses, but unfortunately it still doesn't work.

I checked it in device manager and Windows recognizes it. I don't think that something is wrong with my computer, because I tried it on two different computers (on both it used to work) and I got the same problem.

I'm going to buy a new launchpad and hope that it will work.

Each Launchpad comes with two MSP430 devices.  What happens when you swap out the one that is in the DIP socket for the spare one?  Be aware that the device markings may not be the same for each of these two MSP430's.

      Hi,

My situation is similar to David,

It has worked fine for about 1 week. A few days ago, when I tried to download new code to my MSP430G2553 I first got the following message:  Error initializing emulator:No USB FET was found.  Since then I get this error every time I try to download code on my both microcontrollers.

I have check Windows Device Manager that MSP-EXP430G2 can't be enumerate, but the LaunchPad LED is light.

I also swap spare parts, but same thing. and connect to other 2 computer are same thing.

      Its USB chip seems broken.

      Hi,

I have had the same problem over the last few days. But this problem has been persistent on my new win 7 64 bit machines. The drivers are all up to date and everything, but its failing to load the code onto the LaunchPad (i.e. same error as David, using the CCS v5). Anyway i have an old PC, running XP. I just connected my Launchpad onto it and it is working. CCS on my old PC is version 4.3.3.

So yeah a bit of a mistery huh!
