Confused about XT1 Oscillation Allowance for LF Crystals

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5659

MSP430F5659 (SLAS700B) Page 61 shows oscillation allowance for low frequency crystals and also Note 4 gives additional information.  Sorry, this doesn't make a lot of sense to me.  Can a better description be supplied?

More to the point, I will use a 32768 crystal requiring 12 pF load and having a 35K Ohm series resistance at resonance.  What drive level should I use?

Thanks!

  • There are two appnotes dealing with watch crystals on an MSP. They might clarify some things. But notice that they are rather old and the newest MSP families use improved oscillator circuits. Still worth reading. The documents are slaa423.pdf and slaa322.pdf
