MSP430 wired communication with iphone

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320C5535

I am thinking to use MSP430 or any other TI MCU to communicate with Iphone through USB. I know direct USB might be difficult so I am thinking to use MCU's UART and another chip to convert UART to USB on Iphone. Do you think this hardware will work?

Is there any development board or any recommended documentations that I can grab and use to make the communication between TI MCU and iphone through lightning (not audio jack)? I think a lot of people might have thought about this question before, so I really expect TI can have a demo design(off shelf product or even a schematic) that helps my design.

Any related documentation is helpful.

Thank you !

You may want to check out the DSP 55x series - specifically with respect to USB...

The MSP430 line of MCUs with USB are device only mode. They cannot operate in host mode.

Does the USB port on the iPhone support host mode? That would be the first question I would want to answer.

If it does, does iOS support apps accessing the USB port?

  • Hey Todd,

That is a perfect answer. Thanks a bunch. Here I got a further question:

I checked the schematic of TMS320C5535 EZDSP MODULE, on page 13, I do see a UART-USB convertor, which is FT2232HL.  To extend this methodology, can I basically use any MCU with UART port + FT2232HL to facilitate the communication between MCU and iphone? The reason why I post this question is that I am considering another TI MCU with a even smaller form factor and with a specific function module on it.

Also, forgive me if my second question is too stupid: if we use USB-UART convertor, then we do not have to consider OTG on MCU side, as long as the iphone support USB OTG. Is this right?

    Thanks!

  • Thanks Brian,

I am applying for MFI to apple for USB accessibility.  Honestly I am not sure if ios can be in host mode or not. I was inspired by a iphone case called "mophie", which is basically a iphone case with extra storage and extra battery. iphone is docked into this case using lightning. so iphone can access external storage.  They are already selling this product, so I am sure there must be someway, either USB or not, that can let iphone talk to accessory MCU through wired communication.

I have bought a case like this and I will tear it apart and see. But at the same time, I know TI has tons of experienced engineer, which might very likely have encountered similar question.  so can anyone give me a hand to tell me how can I have a MCU talk with an Iphone through hardware connection?

    Thanks!

Here is another option - a boosterpack for the "G2" launchpad.
