using the BSL via usb on MSP430F5529

I am having a hard time using the bsl on my 5529 launchpad. I have modified the launchpad so that there is a usb cable that is connected to DM and DP on the MSP430 instead of the emulator that is normally connected to the DM and DP pins. This is so that I can test out a method for production programming of the processor.

When I press and hold the BSL pushbutton switch and plug in the USB cable to a PC in order to power things up I do see a USB device show up in the PC's device manager. I get a windows balloon that pops up and says 'USB device not recognized', and the device shows up in the USB controllers section as 'unknown device'. I have tried to load the driver for it named 'MSP430_CDC.inf' but it does not seem to work.

Has anyone else come across this type of behavior? Any suggestions? What should I expect to see when I plug in the USB cable to power up? I'm guessing that as long as I see it being classified as an 'unknown device' I will not be able to communicate via the BSL.

Thanks

  • Hello,

If the connections on your modified board are correct, then when the device is in BSL mode, it should show up as a HID device under the Human Interface Device category in Device Manager.   In order for USB and BSL to work properly, modifications to the board have to follow the guidelines stated in SLAA457a.pdf.  Also SLAU533b.pdf will give you some ways of powering the board and removing the emulator from the picture.
