wrong FRAM usage display

Hello everybody,


for my project i need a lot of memory pages and a lot of code. At the beginning i reserved 0x180 Byte (FRAM_RESERVED) at the end of my FRAM for later usage .

Now i need FRAM_RESERVED in the front of my code FRAM. But when i swap the 2 pieces i get the error "program will not fit into available memory. placement with alignment fails for section "ALL_FRAM" size 0x3a15".

My .map file says that the FRAM_RESERVED is completly unused and my FRAM has 0x1c unused memory. so why cant i swap that? I Have the feeling that ma FRAM needs more space then my .map says.
(I commented the new version out and let the working example inside.)

  • I suspect the problem is down to alignment. The three groups in FRAM_ALL each request 0x200 alignment. With FRAM_RESERVED in front, the FRAM origin becomes 0xC980 and that needs 0x80 bytes of padding to align to an 0x200 boundary.
  • ok i reduced the boundarys and then i get no error, but what is the disadvantage of low small sized boundarys?
    i can reduce them to 0x0002 and get more unused memory, there must be a problem or disatvantage of small size memory boundarys.
  • It might not be wise to do that, at least not without knowing why the groups were aligned that way to begin with.

    One reason I suspect things are set up like this is so the MPU can apply appropriate protection (read/write, read only and read/execute) to the three different groups in FRAM_ALL. Having said that, a quick look at the MPU section of the user's guide suggests that alignment of 0x400 would be needed for that to work correctly, so I'm not sure what's going on there.
  • Hi Robert,

    On FR5738, looking in the FR57xx www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slau272 user's guide section 6.2.1, the smallest granularity on a device with 16kB is 512B = 0x200 alignment. Basically, there are 5 bits for each boundary and you get 16kB/(2^5 = 32) positions = 512B = 0x200. This is different than FR59xx which has larger memory so it's aligned to 0x400 (even though it has more bits too, the memory space is larger).

    And you are right - the alignment is for the MPU. Using the MPU tool built into CCS project settings, if you choose to enable the MPU and let the linker set the boundaries, it is using this grouping that the linker does to set the different protections. This is why the linker is trying to ensure you have these groupings aligned on a 0x200 byte granularity - because this is needed by the MPU setting.
