How to Adapt BOOSTXL-K350QVG-S1 for MSP-EXP430FR5969

I purchased the BOOSTXL-K350QVG-S1 (TFT LCD) as it was listed as compatible with the MSP-EXP430FR5969 Launch Pad.

After receiving the BOOSTXL-K350QVG-S1, I note the documentation states that some modification will be required to mate these boards. However, exactly what mods are required remains a mystery, as the docs do not address this question.

Before I have to re-engineer these boards, can TI lead me to the instructions for mating these boards?

Check section 3.3.1 for the hardware changes required for this launchpad.

May I suggest that a link to www.ti.com/.../tidm-3dgraphics-qvga be placed in the BOOSTXL-K350QVG-S1 document?

One point that is not clear to me. The documentation states "Additionally, the 5-V pin next to VCC on the MSP430FR5969 LaunchPad will need to be populated to supply 5 V to the display"

I think this means J4 Pin 1 on the EXP430FR5969... and I see a pad next to Pin 1 marked 5V, however the docs are not clear what I should do here. If I put 5V on this pin, I think this will destroy the Launch Pad!

Hi,

The 20-pin standard of the boosterpack (used by this launchpad) doesn't have 5V, but the 40-pin standard (used by booster pack) does.

J4-1 has VCC=3V, but the pin next to it -which is not populated by default - has 5V.

You need to populate this pin, so that it provides 5V to the boosterpack. In this way, you'll provide both 3.3V through pin1 and 5V through pin 21 in the boosterpack connector:

Thank you. Now I got it!

Looks like the touch screen won't work - at least using the TIDM_3DGRAPHICS demo. Is lack of touch screen an issue with the 20 pin LaunchPad?

Did you make all the suggested modifications? Touch should work with the TI Design using the launchpad

Yes, touch works. I had to re-calibrate the unit by holding S1 during power up.

Hello, I will be the first to admitting I am a bit of a newbie at this sort of thing, but I am curious if the instructions for wiring found on page 8 in http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/tidu557/tidu557.pdf would also allow me use the board with an MSP-EXP430FR4311? Assuming I also populated the 5V pin by soldering in another pin that is.
