Failed to get device

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5438

Hi,

I am using IAR Embedded Workbench 6.3v compiler. When I was running this compiler, It gave error like below " Failed to get device". How can I solve this problem? Could you help me for this error ?

Error is like below that.

  • Hello Ulvihan,

From the log above, I see that no external voltage nor voltage form the FET is being applied . Can you double check your connections from the FET to the PC, and the FET to the MSP430 device? If using external power, place make sure the external source is engaged. Also if you are using a target board or experimenter's board, please make sure the JTAG jumpers are set appropriately for your power source.

    Regards,
    JH
  • Hello Jace,

I don't have extarnal power that only JTAG power. I can understand true that MSP430 device isn't power so device error gives " Failed to get device". I think I will change MSP430 entegre . Is it true ?
  • Ulvihan,

I am unsure of what you meant in the last sentence, but if you are trying to power the device via the FET while programming, then please make sure the jumpers are set to JTAG or Internal power. In reference to the JTAG connections mentioned in the HW User Guide, this configuration would be VCC From Tool.

also, can you share which board you are using? Do you have a target board or EXP Board of some kind?

    Regards,
    JH

  • Hi Jace,

I am using target board wihich MSP430F5438. My compiler is IAR Embedded Workbench v6.3. Target board is below picture. Target board was bought by company since 2012 on Olimex web site and I am using this board. I have looked MSPF5438 and JTAG datasheet. JTAG is MSP430-JTAG-TINY-V2 model. When i read JTAG and MSP430F5438  datasheets , JTAG voltage power is 3.3V. MSP430F5438 voltage range is 2.2 to 3.6V. I think these device is matched. JTAG cable provides enough voltage for MSP430. As a result MSP430 device is working. Is it true ?

    Thank you for interest

    Ulvihan

  • Ulvihan,

Yes, you can power the MSP430 for programming and debugging with the MSPFET. I am unfamiliar with the board you have though for it is not an official TI Target board. After looking at Olimex's datasheet, please make sure the jumper for P_IN is in place if you want the FET to power the board. Also please make sure the orientation of the JTAG Cable is correct in relation to the header here. Pin one is top right side in the orientation of the photo above.

    Regards,
    JH
