Hi All,

I am working on a project which is based on MSP430F5438A microcontrollor. And I needs to load the firmware via UART(serially) from the PC. I have downloaded the sample project for Bootstrap Loader for MSP430F5438A. I have a few queries which are as follows

1. How to use this sample BSL project.

2. Suppose this BSL project is loaded in MSP430F5438A, how to send the firmware to Microcontroller using UART(serially). Or before sending this firmware to MSP430, we have to convert it into hex file or bin file or image file.

If you are interested in using UART, you can use MSPBoot as described at the above link.

Depending on which IDE you are using, you can follow the steps here to generate MSP430 binary files (.txt/.hex files): processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Generating_and_Loading_MSP430_Binary_Files

The MSP430F5438A come with a factory pre-loaded BSL. It is usable as is. Unless you have a specific reason, there is no need to do a "BSL Project" yourself.

There is also a ready to use PC Program called BSL Scripter from TI that work with the above BSL inside the chip.

Either way (use TI ready solution or do a "BSL Project" yourself) you will need a hardware interface. Again, you could make that hardware yourself or use TI ready solution such as MSP-FET.

Hi,
Can you please tell me how to use BSL scripter. I also have FET-MSP programmer). I am using Code Composer Studio for programming purpose, from here i will get(.hex/.out file). Now, how I have to pass this file to microcontroller using serial port(UART).

Please see the Bootloader (BSL) Scripter User's Guide found here: www.ti.com/.../slau655.pdf

It goes over the usage of the tool and the different commands that can be used.

May I suggest that you also give specific instructions of how to connect MSP-FET with the target board to do BSL? I stumbled there myself.

Hello,

You can do this by connecting the UART pins on the MSP-FET (pins 10, 12, 13, 14) to the UART pins on the MSP430. Page 16 (section 5.6.3) of the MSP Debuggers User's Guide talks more about Target BSL Connection and BSL-Scripter Support: www.ti.com/.../slau647c.pdf

Hi all,
I have created a file TI.txt using vCCS 5.5. I have downloaded the BSL_Scripter exe for loading this .txt file to MSP430F5438A. Now can you please tell me what are the commands to operate this BSL_Scripter exe. Or something more required for doing flashing using serial port (UART-1).

Hi Akash,

I am using BSL_Scripter for loading the firmware on MSP430F5438A using UART. But I am getting few errors. I am attaching Screen shot of that. Here, demo is the BSL-Scripter batch file and BSLdemo02.exe is also tried, PuneCorp-HART.txt is a file created from CCS v5.5 (firmware File).

Hi Jeetesh,

It looks like you may have tried attach some files but were not able to do so. Please use the rich formatting option when replying and click on the paperclip icon to attach a file. The BSL Scripter User Guide that I pointed out in my last post should have information on the commands that are compatible with using this software.
