Getting started with the TI Launchpad and the MSP430

Hey,

I'm a newcomer to embedded design, and would like to begin learning some simple microcontroller concepts with the TI Launchpad. I have already looked at the Quick Start Guide, and managed to program my Launchpad so the LED blinks on and off. I can't seem to find much other documentation, especially not anything that would be useful to beginners like myself. I did find a basic intro to programming the MSP430 at http://focus.ti.com/lit/ug/slau157m/slau157m.pdf , but that link seems to have evaporated. Can anyone tell me where I can find another copy of this document, or point me to another source of basic MSP430 wisdom? Your advice is very much appreciated.

Gautam

  • Hello Gautam,
Another source of information is the LaunchPad wiki. In addition a UserGuide will be published until e/o week.

  • slau157m.pdf is replaced by a later version

    http://focus.ti.com/lit/ug/slau157n/slau157n.pdf

But that document is about the CCS compiler/linker/debugger for MSP430, not for the MSP430 itself.

  • For now there are not too many beginner specific resources for the LaunchPad since it is such a new product, though there is a community slowly forming. On the TI Wiki for the LaunchPad there has been mention of a Google Group started specifically for the LaunchPad, and I also mentioned there that I started a blog which will provide pretty good information (from the basic level to the advanced level) for getting started once I receive my board. For now it is just a waiting game for everyone I think.

I am an old-timer who does not know how to respond to blogs. I tried to respond to your blog. In doing so, Google locked my account out and wanted me to give them my cell phone to text me a verification. Well, I do not have a cell phone.

Any way, I was trying to tell you that the “Important TI update” you quoted there was incorrect.

Oh no! Sorry that Google messed up your account, I actually have it set up that you don't even need to sign in to post. Anyways, what is incorrect about it? I could have overlooked something since I made the post quickly while I was at work and didn't want to spend too much time on my blog. I'll be double checking things while I wait for your response. Thanks though for letting me know. The last thing I want to do is provide incorrect information.
