MSPXX + CCxxx (For Eg MSP430F6435 + CC2520) Vs Wireless WMCU(CC2650) IOT Platform

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2650, CC2520, MSP430F6435, MSP430FR5994, MSP430FR6047

Hi,

We will like to understand the architectural advantages / disadvantages for a industrial IOT Platform with MSPXX + CCxxx (For Eg MSP430F6435 + CC2520) Vs Wireless WMCU(CC2650) solution

Power Consumption:
MSP430F6435 + CC2520 Active power supply: 2.1mA(8mhz/Flash) + 1.6mA (Active) = 3.7mA
Wireless MCU CC2650 Active Power Supply: 1.45mA + 0.248mA (at 8Mhz) + RF Core Idle 0.237mA? = 1.9MA
Wireless MCU solution holds advantage.?

Cost:
Wireless MCU solution holds advantage.

Form Factor:
Wireless MCU solution holds advantage.

Flexibility For multiple Radio technologies:
a. MSPxx+ CCxx Solution has flexibility to change radios
b. With Wireless MCU can we have the same flexibility of using external radio(on UART/SPI) if needed by switching off the internal Radio Core? Do we need to use TI RTOS for this or HAL apis are provided open source?

Applications:
a. Are Wireless MCU CC2650 and MSP both equally good for industrial low power applications?

Guidance/inputs/view would help.

Regards,
Prashant

  • Prashant,
    I can answer the MSP parts, but will have to loop in someone for the CC2650.

    For the power consumption, your numbers only reflect active mode. You may want to take in account Low Power Modes. Also, checking the data sheets, I'm seeing much lower number for MSP and higher nymbers for the CC2650. Where are you getting these numbers from?

    As "Applications", both wireless MCU and MSP are industry leaders for industrial low power applications.
  • The active mode power consumption figures are from datasheet

    a. MSP430F6435 section->Active Mode Supply Current Into VCC Excluding External Current : 2.1mA, I-AM Flash @ 8mhz

    b. CC2520 Section-> 5.4 Current Consumption, Active mode Typ 1.6mA

    Total a+b = 2.1+1.6=3.7mA

    c. CC2650 Table 6-2. Power Modes Icore Active Core 1.45mA + 0.248mA(31uA/MHz*8) + RF Core Idle 0.237mA? = 1.9MA

    Low Power Mode:

    a. MSP430F6435 section->Low-Power Mode Supply Currents (Into VCC) Excluding External Current LPM3 @25degC ->1.2uA

    b. CC2520 Section-> 5.4 Current Consumption,LPM1 Typ 175uA or LPM2 30nA

    Total a+b = 1.2uA + 175uA or 1.2uA + 30nA?

    c. CC2650 Table 6-2. Power Modes Standby. With RTC, CPU, RAM and (partial) register retention. RCOSC_LF - >1uA. (Assuming Peripherals can be powered off.)

    Please correct if I am missing anything or any gap in understanding.

    Regards,

    Prashant

  • Prashant,
    What are your requirements for the MSP? Looking at the CC2650 and the MSP430F6435, they are fairly different as far as memory size and peripheral set. There may be a better fit on a different part, perhaps an FRAM offering such as MSP430FR5994 or MSP430FR6047.

    If you'd like to discuss further details offline, I can do that as well, just let me know!
