CCS/MSP430F5529: Cannot program independent MSP430F5529 from launchpad: Error connecting to target

Part Number: MSP430F5529
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EXP430F5529LP

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

I'm trying to program an MSP430F5529 on a custom PCB from the MSP-EXP430F5529LP launchpad. I am powering the MSP430 from the launchpad and jumping the JTAG pins from the launchpad programmer to the MSP430. When I try to debug in CCS, I get the error "Error connecting to the target: Unknown device."

Currently the PCB is only populated with the MSP430, power bypass capacitors, and VCORE capacitor. I am not using an external oscillator. The 47k pull-up and 1nF capacitor on the RST pin are connected externally, not on the PCB. The oscilloscope shows that the RST pin is not pulled low by the programmer and RST stays at 3.3v.

I have tried programming over SBW and have the same issue. Does anyone have any insight into this problem?

Thank you

  • Programming over SBW is the only option if using the MSP-EXP430F5529LP eZ-FET lite. Make sure that the 3V3, GND, RST, and TST connections are all correct using the MSP-EXP430F5529LP schematics as a guide. Long trace lengths between the eZ-FET and custom PCB could be introducing enough parasitic capacitance to interfere with communication.

    Regards,
    Ryan

  • Hi Ryan, thanks for the response. Removing the 1nF on RST solved the problem. The PCB traces must have sufficient parasitic capacitance on their own.
