MSP432P401R: processor heats up but board work fine

Part Number: MSP432P401R

i today i got my development board processor got heated but board work fine why ?

  • In my experience, it is because on one of the output lines one end is forcing it one way and the other end is forcing it the other way.

For example you may have a pin connected to ground, and your logic has it as an output and you are trying to make it high. Or the other way., you have a pin connected to VCC and are trying to force it low. Finally you have your output connected to another device's output and one side is going high and the other is going low.

Or you have a short (or solder bridge) causing the thing above if it is not a design problem.

Also check you voltage to the device is within specification.

It will work for awhile, but eventually will probably give up. Blow cold air on it while you have it on and are looking for the error.
  • ok but when i removed all the wires ,also getting overheated without connecting any wire?
  • Is this a Launchpad? What color is it? The Black ones were susceptible to this (at least all of mine were).

  • this is launchpad ,color is red
  • If you have nothing connected I would suspect a faulty board.
  • Hey Sachin,

Thanks for posting to the forum.
I think you'll need to post more details if you'd like help.

You mentioned you were using the MSP-EXP432p401R Rev1.2 Launchpad ?
What software is running on the board?

Does it continue to stay heated after a power cycle? If not I agree with kipton below that it was likely a temporary effect.
Please let us know if you are seeing this in a repeatable, sustained manner.

  • I order this board from element14 and the board is faulty when I first plug the power it get heated, I just called element 14 and told them but they do not respond me,this is the first time me with TI, I am not impressed by TI,ST is better than TI so I always prefer ST over TI, because TI doesn't support customer care service they are just selling their product .they don't know the customer satisfaction is more important.

  • mam if you can solve my issue please replace this bord or tel me the solution if you are not able to return or replace it tell me clearly ,so that i can move to ST arm cortex -M series ,please clear i dont have time
  • Hey Sachin,
Contacting Element14 since the board was purchased from them was definitely the right thing to do.
It's possible that the board was experiencing some kind of a latch up leading to the heating issue. However I'd expect this goes away when you perform a power cycle , so you should not see this manifest in a sustained manner.
Given the quantity of LaunchPads out there, it's always hard to pinpoint issues easily to a single root cause.

You can contact me offline if you have more questions.
I'll close this thread in the forum.
