CCS/MSP430G2553: Having trouble tracking down a problem with uart data signal.

Part Number: MSP430G2553
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EXP430G2ET, MSP430-FUNCTION-CODE-EXAMPLES

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

I am trying to use realterm to communicate with the msp430 launchpad with a simple echo program loaded onto it. The msp430 shows up in the com port list like it should. However, after I select the proper baud and send data through the terminal I get no response  (with both hardware and software uart). I tried several things to fix the problem including reinstalling the drivers for the msp430, reinstalling realterm, reinstalling code composer studio, switching the cable, and trying all usb ports on my computer. I know the device and cable work because realterm echos properly when tested on my laptop. I used the scope to check if there was any data being transferred at all, but it appears the signal is never leaving the computer. I tried using the terminal that comes with ccs but when I type in the terminal ccs hangs.  What is weird is I am still able to program and debug the msp430 just fine. Any ideas as to what is going on? Did I fry or scramble something on my computer? I am so stumped on this one.

Thanks in advance.
