MSP430F5529: MSP430F5529: mdio waveform looks not correct

Hi,

I use the msp430f5529 Launchpad and usb-2-mdio software downloaded from TI website to drive my chip, extended register mode is expected so I choose 'extended registers' to 'yes', but when I check the mdio pin, I find ST is always 01, OP is always 01, but they should be 00 00 for write and 00 11 for read. Besides this, I find there is extra 32bit between TA and addr/data. How can I debug this?

I also tried mdio clause 22(select 'extended registers' to 'no'), it works fine.

Which Ethernet Phy you are using this with ?

Hi Geet,

I didn't connect it to chip, I just capture the waveform of pin 4.1(mdio) and pin 4.2(mdc) of this board(MSP-EXP430F5529LP) got from TI.

Hi Eric,

Just to understand your problem, you are trying to use USB-MDIO Software tool with MSP430 LaunchPad to connect to TI Phy and access extended registers. You are facing problem in this ?

or you are trying to reverse engineer the software for your own implementation ?

Your are right, I'm trying to use USB-MDIO Software tool with MSP430 LaunchPad to connect to TI Phy and access extended registers. And I face problem. I didn't modify any software.

Hi,

It shall work out of the box. Can you confirm your Phy is powered up properly ? Can you see RX_CLK On MII interface ? What is the speed of the clock ?

Hi Geet,

I'm confused, let me explain the problem again.
I connect computer and the MSP430 LaunchPad with USB interface, and use oscilloscope to catch the 2 pins(pin 4.1 and pin 4.2 which are MDC and MDIO) on the LanuchPad. Then I use USB-2-MDIO tool downloaded from TI website to do register write/read operation. I see the waveform of these two pins are not correct on oscilloscope which is shown above.

We use the same software and MSP432 in our lab for testing extensively and we don't see the issue.

Hi Geet,

Is it caused by different environment we use? The OS of my computer is win7 64bits, usb version is 3.0.
I'm sure I did everything according to the USB-2-MDIO Software Tool User's Guide downloaded from TI website.

Hi Eric,

We also have lot of pc still on windows7. I am pretty sure you had ground wire connected between MSP430 LP and your board with Phy.

Hi Geet,

Sorry, I don't understand. I just connect the mdc,mdio and GND pins to oscilloscope to watch the waveform. I didn't connect the MSP430 LP to any Phy.

Hi Eric,

However when you tried to use MDIO Tool to read register from Phy, you would have connected all 3 wires. isn't it ?

Hi Geet,

I connect MDC pin to one oscilloscope probe, MDIO pin to another probe, and GND pin to GND of the two oscilloscope probes.
