MSP432P401R: Lab 2 question on the resource explorer

My customer is working through the Resource Explorer, SimpleLink MSP432P4 SDK, 4.2.1 TI Resource Explorer Labs, he is noticing they’re somewhat out of date.

One apparent show-stopper is in LAB 2 – Basic Debug Concepts, Watchpoints, where it instructs the user to add the global variable count to the Expressions view but unfortunately the global variable count doesn’t exist in my MSP432 SDK v3.40.

The lab graphics show v1.20 and a Watchpoints graphic shows the global variable count being both referenced and assigned value 0 inside the code of the function gpioButtonFxn0(), whereas in his v3.40 function gpioButtonFxn0() doesn’t have that variable.

Your guidance would be appreciated.

Hey Viktorija,

Sorry for the delay. I'm looking at the SlimpleLink Academy training in the MSP432P4 SDK v3.40 and I can't find a "lab 2: Basic Debug Concepts" anywhere. Maybe it's embedded in on of the 15 of so SLA's, but walking through, I wasn't able to locate it.

The problem is the global variable count doesn’t exist in the function gpioButtonFxn0() of project gpiointerrupt in my MSP432 SDK v3.40, at least not the one I imported from the SDK.

Hey Kris,

Thank you very much for the link, I don't think I would have found this otherwise. You are correct, this "workshop" is out of date and the gpioInterrupt example has been updated and does not have a "count" variable currently. Unfortunately, that example doesn't seem to have any global variables for you to watch.

I'll submit a bug report for this so these quick start guides and workshops can be reviewed for the next release. I believe these were intended to be integrated or replaced by SimpleLink Academy, which is maintained with each release. I don't see a training covering the debug view in as much detail as this workshop, but here are a few that I think are good general starting labs:

Hey JD, thanks for the response!

At the moment I don't have debug view questions but I do have some regarding the ... MSP432P4 SDK (I think).

1. It appears the example projects in TI Drivers have SysConfig and those from DriverLib do not. Is this always true?

2. I noticed example projects in TI Drivers includes have what look to be drivers from DriverLib.

Do the TI Drivers make use of the drivers of DriverLib?

Are the TI Drivers another layer of abstraction on top of the drivers of DriverLib?

3. Somewhere in the literature I read that creating new projects is not recommended. Instead, users should import an existing project and modify that. Why is that?

Hey Kris,

1. Yes, this is true. SysConfig is a newer tool to help configure devices, especially when using TI Drivers. Also, I know that all of the MSP432P4 SDK Academy were being updated to leverage sysconfig and I believe that was completed.

2. Yes! Ti Drivers is another level of abstraction built on top of components like DriverLib. The goal of TI Drivers is to be consistent across the whole SimpleLink Platform which is MSP432 but also several connectivity products with Wifi, BLE, Zigbee, ect. 3. Typically when you make a new project in CCS, it won't have any of the libraries linked or in the project build search paths. For the SDK, there are many tools and library that need to be linked as well as to have support for the SysConfig output files.

Even when I start a new project for a basic MSP430 project, I'll import a basic "GPIO toggle" for the product I'm supporting and then rename it and customize from there.
