    LM3S811 OLED DOA?

      Hello all,

I just received my LM3S811 evaluation kit and the OLED is flaky. The demo application that is supposed to start showed the "splash screen" with the Luminary logo exactly once, and I can't get it to do it again. I installed the Keil tools, can compile and download programs without any trouble (hello and the qs_ev-lm3s811 projects), but the OLED is just blank.

After 2 minutes, the USER LED starts pulsing to indicate the scren saver, so I think the rest of the board is working OK (power LED is on), but the OLED remains blank.

Are there any settings in the uVision tool (clock frequency?) that are wrong by default? or is the board just DOA?

      Hi,

Looks like a bit of a bad luck. These OLEDs modules seem to be quite fragile and are just glued to the board without any support. You could try doing following (it is not a magic trick!) upload the original software, turn on the board and touch the screen with your finger and then very gently rock it just a bit back and forth. See if you get anything on the screen. You might get lucky and get it to work but in any case I would ask for replacement. Another possibility is the static discharge, any chance of that happening when you were handling the board?

Unless Pawel's wiggle suggestions work for you, it does sound as if your OLED is DOA. Those OLEDs are very cool but they are a bit fragile.

If you bought your EKK-LM3S811 from a distributor, please contact the distributor to get an RMA number and they'll replace your kit as quickly as possible.

If you received your EKK-LM3S811 from Circuit Cellar as part of the design contest, please contact Luminary Micro's customer service at customer.service@luminarymicro.com for an RMA number, and we'll replace your kit as quickly as possible.

      Regards,

Thanks...I have requested an RMA. Today, the OLED came on and displayed the LMI logo briefly before going (and staying) blank. This was repeated for about 5 insert-remove cycles of the USB. Then, the logo only came on (scrolling upwards) for a fraction of a second before going dark. Maybe there's a temperature dependence somewhere that arises as the parts heat up.

It's maddening because the OLED works, but only sometimes and only for a brief second! Pawel's suggestion did not make any difference, unfortunately.

      Anyways...thanks for the support.

Mine was DOA also. I fixed it though. I used a very steady hand and my SMD tip on the soldering iron. I just touched each of the ribbon cable pads for a couple seconds to remelt the solder. This seem to fix which ever solder joints were loose, the display works great now. Good luck.
