DRV8320: VM PIN burning problem

Part Number: DRV8320

Hi,

I am making circuits using DRV 8320 RS, The phenomenon that the VM PIN burns occurs.

・When loading the motor, apply current of 100A or more to the FET.
・Buck Regulator(LMR16006X) is not broken.
・There are also many circuits that will not break(VM).
I would like advice if this is the reason why this phenomenon happens.

I attach an image.

Best Regards,

Takashi Mito

If you know the cause of this phenomenon, please give me some advice.
  • Hello,

You are trying to apply current of 100A or more to the FET. I would recommend adding more capacitors on VM and VDRAIN.
According to Input and Output Capacitor Selection application notes (www.ti.com/.../slta055.pdf), if you 2uF (estimate number for 10uF with 24V bias voltage) input capacitor, 45kHz PWM frequency, 24Vinput, 50% PWM duty cycle, the ripple voltage is even large than the input voltage number. That tells us the input capacitance is too small to hold input voltage stable. This may be the root cause of the damage. Please add more capacitance on VDRAIN and TM.
  • Hi Wang,

    Thank you for the advice.

I will get 10 boards and try out advice.
