DRV8837C: Help with selecting the right part

Part Number: DRV8837C
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8832, DRV8832EVM,

Hi Team,

I am working with a customer on narrowing down the best part for their application. Right now we are debating between the DRV8837C and DRV8832. The intended use is to control a flow pump.

This motor driver will feed off a 3V - 4.2V battery and supply a variable voltage to the pump motor. They need ideally around 10-bits of PWM resolution and need it to run the pump at ~0.7V to 4.2V with good resolution.

Do both the DRV8837C and DRV8832 have continuous PWM adjustment? What's the resolution of these devices? Let me know your thoughts on the best device to promote here.

Thanks,
Mitchell

  • Hi Mitchell,

The DRV8837C allows continuous PWM adjustment while the DRV8832 allows continuous VSET adjustment.

What is the desired PWM input frequency for the DRV8837C?

The DRV8832 is designed to produce a voltage to the motor that is 4x the VSET voltage. The duty cycle variation of the internal 44.5kHz PWM is handled automatically in the device.

I suggest the customer begin by evaluating the DRV8832EVM.

The DRV8837C can also work. Again using the DRV8837CEVM is a great way to begin the evaluation. There are a couple of resistors on the EVM that will have to be removed to allow the customer to experiment with the inputs.
