I was hoping to seek clarification on the return path of GLx. It appears that the return path will be SPx when using a shunt resistor. If this is true, then I assume that best practice would be to make the SPx trace as thick as the GLx trace to accommodate the possible 2A current flow. This would mean that one would not use relatively thinner differential traces that are common for current sensing since SPx is also used for current sensing?

Yes you are correct, I would always make the source line as thick as the gate line for all high sides and low sides since yes the source path is both for monitoring and the discharge path for the gate turn off. This being said, most people are not going to be using a 1A/2A setting and therefore you don't need super thick traces.
